Posted: 05 Jun 2006 Hi Ruth, Love at first bite?? Male slow-worms bite the females in this way during mating and also rival males as territorial behaviour. All quite normal to slow-worms, but not often observed, so well done with getting the photographs If you take a close look at older slow-worms they often have multiple scars around the head and neck from these encounters, but rarely is any real harm done.
