Posted: 19 Apr 2004 Hi, So, whats the crac with the common lizard and its metamorphosing name? I've noticed Zootoca vivipara being used more and more in journals but am no clearer as to when and why the change occurred (and if the term is universal)..please enlighten me Thanks Lisa |

Posted: 01 May 2004 Why, seems to be evidence that the previously named L.v is different enough from other Lacerta to warrant the change, when, as more and more people accept the evidence they will take on Zootoca - though last I heard the evidence had been challanged. Tony mentioned this in another thread, you can use the search facility and type in 'Zootoca', choose search within the message bodies and the relavent thread should come up. I'll still be putting L.v on recording cards for years to come I suspect :0) Gemma Fairchild, Independent Ecological Consultant |

Posted: 01 May 2004 Hi Gemma, Thanks for that, I found Tony's previous messages so its all as clear as mud now!! :) I expect I shall also be using L.v for some time (hopefully by that time we will have come full circle again eh?). Whatever its latest latin name the viviparous (not the derogatory common) lizard is still wonderful.

Posted: 15 Jun 2005 No, i don't buy the need at all to mess with the name of such a widely distributed & clearly recognised lizard, whatever the ins'n'outs. I wouldn't exactly say, if it isn't broke, then don't fix it!, but i just don't see the major need for this palava. Zootoca,...Yuk! With respect, personally, for the foreseeable future i'll be sticking with Viviparous, or rather my often shortened & fond term..Vivip'! That just sounds more the business for a reptile. I mean,..a Zoey! Naaaa, i don't wanna remember her! And any righteous, ignorant snobbery with not acknowledging anything merely because the name Viviparous is used, well...i won't lose any sleep over any smart Alec!, or Alectoca! Whether it's a Vivip', or a Zoey (Urrrrgh!) we'll pretty much all know the familiar fella in question. I won't be ignoring anything on Zootapioca, but to me, they're Vivip's! |
