Posted: 13 Feb 2007 i have had 1 clump laid last night 12th feb, i think thats my earliest yet, iam down in Cardiff, have also had spawn in my grandparents pond a few miles away. there has been abit of activity in the pond, although not in great numbers, have also seen the palmate newts in there over last few weeks but i tend to find theres always a few hanging around for the winter. it will be interesting to see when the rest arrive, i normally get 15/20 clumps i think, for a small young pond it has a good frog population :) Mike Lister BSc hons Ecology & Env management |

Posted: 13 Feb 2007 My neighbour told me an hour ago she had 5 clumps of spawn today in her pond. I had 2 pairs mating frogs in my pond Sunday night. We're in East Devon BTW. Suz |

Posted: 13 Feb 2007 i had a pair mating last week saturday (3th feb). were stuck(!) together till the snow fell weds-thurs (7-8th). since then seen nothing of them although three single (different) frogs are floating around near the surface since the weather became milder. i'm guessing their (the mating pairs) collective weights have pulled them down into the leaves at the bottom of the pond. Posted: 14 Feb 2007 Spent an hour at lunchtime sat by my neighbour's pond in the sunshine watching the antics of her frogs (tis Valentine's Day after all!). The males were croaking and chasing females and also seeing off other males. She now has lots more clumps of spawn than the original 5. My pond is empty of spawn despite mating seeming to be going on for a week or more. The ponds are about 30 yards apart. I wondered if my mated females were going to her pond to give birth! Suz |

Posted: 19 Feb 2007 none here either (middlesex/west london), both in my garden pond and the local ponds. i have had a pair in amplexus for 15 days now with no eggs yet. there is also another single frog, which i am hoping is a female so that 2 loads of spawn are produced. the single frog isn't really competing with the male in amplexus so i think it might be a female. Posted: 19 Feb 2007 Dorchester. Frogs spawned successfully in my very small garden pond (an old butler sink) rather than in the larger pond next door to it on 14 Feb 2007. Frogs clasping in larger pond but still unproductive! Why the smaller one, I wonder. More cosy, warmer perhaps? All the best Neil |

Posted: 19 Feb 2007 My neighbour has a pond full of spawn and I have none so far but up to 3 pairs per night of frogs in amplexus so I am still hoping for some. It seems from what I've read that a particular pond tends to have all its spawn more or less at once whilst one nearby might get spawn a week or more later. My pond is getting little sun and my neighbour's gets more (when there is any to be had!!). Also my pond is overall deeper so will not be as warm. Suz |

Posted: 21 Feb 2007 Hi everyone doing a bit of amphibian recording last night while walking the dog - I found three breeding ponds - just listening out for the frog chorus The three garden ponds are also in the front garden so I could see the movement of the frogs when I walked pass So I have three breeding sites (possibly more) within 500metres of my garden - I have already found an adult frog in my garden and I am planning to build a new pond soon so I will hope to have breeding frogs in a few years (hopefully less) Regards Jon
