Posted: 18 Aug 2005 anyone have any tips on places in the oxford/reading area to find adders ? and anyone with any tips on times of day etc would be great also many thanks Paul |

Posted: 19 Aug 2005 Hi Paul, We have a policy of not posting site details on the forums, particularly for adder unless already very well known. The best option is to contact your local arg (unless anyone here is from Oxford??). It will save you hours of fruitless hunting. http://www.oxfordshire-arg.org.uk/ If you check through some of the threads there are literally dozens of discussions about when and how to locate reptiles.

Posted: 20 Aug 2005 Thanks Gemma, I went off to a site I found via google kingwood common today but it was very fruitless i saw nothing at all not even so much as a frog! I think i need to learn where to look aswell as which locations to look in maybe ? If anyone is in the oxfordshire area and goes out spotting do let me know how you get on please I get the impression allthough adders have been seen in kingwood common they are not often seen there so maybe not the best place to start with I will contact the arg group as suggested and maybe they can help me find an adder in the wild ! |

Posted: 14 Nov 2005 If you're refering to BBONTs brilliant flagship reserve, Warburg, then i'm sure i recall that when i last visited there, 4-5 y'rs ago, i was told by a warden that they reckoned Adder numbers had slighly declined there, possibly due to some really rough weather changes they'd experienced. (Apparently, such is the valley-like lay of the land at Warburg that it's previously recorded frosts in - if i recall correctly - every month of the year!) I think i recall that warden telling me he reckoned they were down to around 12-15 adults (of which he showed me one male), but he seemed optomistic enough that numbers would hopefully - in time - recover a bit. He said that young had been seen about as well. There's almost certainly no Adders about here in north oxfordshire where i am,..plenty of Grass snakes though. Positive Adder recordings in most of oxfordshire are so scarce, but there are a few places, mainly south of Oxford, where they're meant to still exist,..undoubtedly in rare numbers though. I wouldn't purposely bother searching hardly anywhere in the county for them. |

Posted: 14 Nov 2005 ive passed on to the rangers 5 individuals ive seen so far but they dont know how many there are and fear theyre may only be around 10 but im hopeing come spring i can get more shots and help to give them more of an idea |
