Posted: 12 Jun 2006 A week ago I found approx 32 newts in an old quarry. After this week's hot weather the water has dried up and the newt numbers have dropped drastically. Would this be caused by the heat/loss of water? Would it be wise to recue and relocate the remaining newts to a pond? |

Newts are terrestrial (mainly) so they would move away from areas which dry up and so if they cannot get out of the quarry or there are no suitable shelter under stones etc then a rescue may be needed. But have a good look around and note any features - bushes, grassland areas - rubble etc where the animals will wander to during the night. It would be best to leave the animals where they are as we are drawing to the end of the breeding season and so will be naturally leaving water for land anyway
