Posted: 28 Apr 2007 Hi all , just spent a couple of days in the merseyside dunes seen 40 diffrent sand lizards , sorry no pics , left camera at home . Spent some of my time with Mike brown and he got quite a few pics |

Posted: 28 Apr 2007 Hi Paul I think that if we tot up todays and yesterdays sightings, both ours and Mikes, the number exceeds 50 animals (20% of the estimated Merseyside population !!??), and that was from only 5 sites (nucleii). Here's hoping Mike's pics turn out OK, since we were both caught out without camera. In comparison, the numbers of Zv seen were probably below 10. Interestingly, a significant proportion of the observed La (and Zv) were last years brood, and even the 'adult' animals were on the younger side of 2-3 years, especially the females. I have a suspicion that larger females may be more in evidence during the latter part of May, as egg laying approaches. Mind you, as always, the cost of spending 11 hours in the dunes is a sun-scorched face/arms/legs which might be just that bit more uncomfortable tomorrow !! John Newton South Yorkshire ARG |

Posted: 29 Apr 2007 Hi glad you lads up north are having some good sitings I am a bit late looking for them down here in the south east but expect a visit to me old sites very soon with great expectations. keith

Posted: 29 Apr 2007 Hi Ray Even though the past years efforts have not produced any positive sightings, there is still the possibility that sand lizard could turn up on the Fylde coast, especially the Lytham area. I think you do the right thing as well to shift your attention away from the mobile dunes at the airport, and look at more peripheral habitat, especially where there is historic continuity over the past 50 years or more, and where boundary/linear features result in a localised 'abundance' of herp species. Posted: 29 Apr 2007 Thanks John,it helps to think I am looking in the right places. As I said before in my pm The areas I have been checking are almost a carbon copy of the sights we were checking out a few weeks ago and I'm always hopeful of finding Sl's.The local residents are a bit more reserved (posh) I've not had one ask me what I'm up to, obviously used to seeing complete strangers walking up and down very slowly staring into oblivion.
