Posted: 16 Apr 2007 Hi all, over the weekend I wandered some heathland near me in the Mendip hills and saw several of the elusive green-coloured Common Lizards. Of ten or so Commons I saw in about an hour, at least three of them were green and were breeding males. They really do look like little green or sand lizards as they race through the dry yellow grass, im not surprised people mistake them for greens or agilis. Have a look at the pics, Rob PS i also saw a huge male black adder, stunning beast! |

Posted: 16 Apr 2007 HI Rob and welcome ! He's a beautiful lizard, stunning colouration. A couple of guys from the forum also frequent the Mendips, although its been many years since I last visited the area personally. Steve Langham - Chairman Surrey Amphibian & Reptile Group (SARG). |

Posted: 16 Apr 2007 I bet it looked better in the flesh as it were - I often see lizards with a slight hue of green in their scales but not as much as your lizards. I have only seen one picture of a green viv lizard where it is really really green I mean vivid and that is a photo taken by Slippery42..... I have seen 'orange' lizards in kent - no camera though

Posted: 17 Apr 2007 Hi Rob Keep a watch on these lizards. From my wn experience, these green/vivid blue males appear to be a transient phenomenon, immediately following the first skin shed. There are a couple of Merseyside sites, shared with La, where I've been convinced I was looking at Pm bruggemani animals, absolutely. Similarly blue animals are also seen on some of the moors to the west of Sheffield. Elsewhere, Derbyshire females occasionally have impressively green flanks which are a permanent feature, visible all the year round. John Newton South Yorkshire ARG |

Posted: 18 Apr 2007 Lovely pix. I too have seen green ones that colour here in East Devon but also a bright coppery green one that was really startlingly bright. There is a pic of it somewhere on these forums but the lizard is rather curled up. The brightness of my coppery one did not translate so well in the picture. Suz |

Posted: 15 Sep 2007 i don't think it quite matches yours rob, but this is one of 2 green males in my sons possesion which he bred from this spring. most of the offspring were released back where he caught the adults last year. he has kept a couple of the young to rear himself so it will be interesting to see if any of them turn green. i have only seen this colouration in males at this site. the site is a couple of miles west of stocksbridge, near langsett reservoir between sheffield and barnsley. |

Posted: 17 Sep 2007 this is one of the offspring sired by the above male, and on closer inspection it already has a greenish hue

Posted: 27 Oct 2007 Not nearly as green as the other ones, these were the greenest ones I came across this year in Cumbria. Interesting to note that it's the tail which is mostly green in the lower male, whilst it's not so green in the above female, but there is a greenish-blueish tint on the chin and back of her; Just a thought but could the green tail be a 'lure' as other lizards have so that when or if it is attacked by a predator it will be more inclined to go for the tail and not the main body of the lizard? Nice colours on both of them anyway...... Dan Dan www.randacumbria.moonfruit.com |

Posted: 05 Nov 2007 Hello Here's a 'green' common lizard from a London site earlier this year - the dorsal scales and tail are the greenest. It looked much greener -as they always do - in the flesh, with the sun glinting on the scales Will |

Posted: 23 May 2008 This lizard is definitely the most beautiful I have ever seen. The green colour and the white spotting were just amazing. Photo was taken at south stack, Anglesey. This is another green common lizard from south-eastern Anglesey, taken a couple of years ago. When my mate first spotted it he was convinced it was a sand lizard (which are absent from Anglesey), so he spent 30mins staking out the spot so he could capture it. Turned out to just be a very green vivipara.
